Artist Matt Smith has been selected to receive an award by the artists’ resource centre at the aspex gallery, Portsmouth.
The award provides Matt with 12 months mentoring by the arc team, a cash prize and an exhibition at the aspex gallery in 2010.
Matt, whose work has been shown at the V&A and at the Barbican is also being supported by Arts Council England. He uses ceramics to explore social and political subjects and will be developing a new body of work for the 2010 exhibition at the gallery.
Matt says of the award “this is a very exciting opportunity to gain the backing of a publicly funded gallery and be mentored over the next twelve months. Having a guaranteed exhibition at the end of the project encourages you to take greater risks and I am delighted to be working with the team at arc.”
